Facials are sooooooo important to your facial routine because it promotes healthy, clean, smooth, bright skin. I would say at least once every 4-6 weeks you should do a facial whether it's at home or you're going to a spa to get it done. Of course, facials are going to cost you a bit but its worth every penny, especially when you notice the changes you've been looking for. Finding a spa that you can trust isn't difficult at all, you just have to pay attention to the products and the tools being used. Make sure you're familiar with the way that they work in the facility as well as being familiar with the procedure and steps they take in order to assist with turning over your skin cells and providing you with a glowing skin tone.
At home facials aren't as expensive as going to a spa but they are just as effective when done properly. You'll need a few things:
-Toner
-Facial cleaner (soap or daily cleaner; whatever you use)
-Exfoliant
-Extractor (if you know what you are doing although not recommended at home I will explain)
-Steamer and a cloth (or a pot and water)
-Facial serum/moisturizer
-Face mask
1. Cleanse. I prefer to use my REAL black soap and wash my face to remove anything on my face that doesn't belong, using warm water of course. I have yet to find a cleanser for my face. Of course, if you have or use a different cleanser, that will work too. Do not rush to wash your face. Washing your face should take a few minutes, I would suggest 3-5 minutes. Give your face a good massage while washing it. (Use as directed, skin sensitivity is real!) Rinse and pat dry.
2. Steam. It is time to steam baby! This part makes you feel as if you are really at a spa. The easiest way to steam is to boil a pot of water and have a towel/cloth ready. For about 10 minutes put your face over the hot water (taking breaks in between if needed) to open your skin follicles(pores).
3. Extracting. I would not recommend that you do this on your own unless you are sure you know what you are doing and even then you can make a mistake. Extracting is the process of removing any black or white heads with a tool but it is super easy to irritate or scar your face. Licensed technicians are the best way to go with this step.
4. Exfoliation. If you plan to extract that’s cool but if not just skip over that step and begin exfoliating after you steam your face. Exfoliation is a great way to remove any dead, dull, and dry skin cells you may have on the surface on the top layer of your skin. It helps fade dark spots by removing the skin that contains the pigment. Also, it helps your serums and moisturizers really absorb into your skin by unclogging and minimizing your pores.
5. Time to mask. Now get your favorite face mask. I prefer a charcoal mask and my brightening peel mask, those are my go-to's. My charcoal gel mask pulls excess oils and impurities from clogged pores, lifting away dead and dull skin without over drying. My brightening peel mask does exactly what it sounds like it does, it brightens the skin, all while leaving my face feeling nourished and moisturized. A clay mask is also highly recommended for a deeper cleansing. Rinse with warm(or colder than warm) water and pat dry.
6. Apply your favorite toner. I like to use Witch Hazel (T.N Dickinson's) to rid my face of anything I didn't get to rid before, also to help tighten those pores back up.
7. Hydrate! My favorite mist to use just so happens to be Mario Badescu facial spray with aloe, herbs, and rosewater. THE BEST, I PROMISE! I let it dry a bit and use my jade roller to really set the tone.
8. We treat and moisturize! I combined these two because I like to use my serums to keep my face moisturized and hydrated. However, you can use Cetaphil or Clinique as a moisturizer after you treat your skin with a serum. I just use what is best for my face. It is very important to use a facial serum or moisturizer to assist your skin in promoting a glowing skin tone. We do not want dry skin! I prefer to use a Hyaluronic Acid on my face or a Collagen and Rose serum. Be careful using any acid on your face, NO not acid that can burn through your flesh. Each AHA has low to strong percentages and the higher does not mean the better. Again, skin sensitivity is real. Use what is best for YOUR skin. The collagen and rose face serum promotes a healthy glow to your face. Collagen helps keep the elasticity in your skin!
9. Now let's not forget about our eyes. Since our eyes are a very sensitive area and it is hard to really focus on them this is where you treat them. The skin around our eyes are super sensitive and can dehydrate very quick. What I use is a lift and firm, collagen and elastin eye gel. My eye gel is from SKINLAB and I absolutely love it. It he reduce any puffiness around my eyes as well as lifting them if they look any sort of baggy (you know how you get bags under your eyes lol).
Also, at the same time I like to hydrate my lips with either a lip mask or make a natural concoction containing lemon juice(squeezed from a real lemon), coconut oil, and sugar. I make my own lip scrub to keep them hydrated. It is very important that you do not forget the eyes and the lips, they are apart of your face as well.
And voila! Your face is feeling rejuvenated, moisturized, and soft all while giving a very glowing look.
I really hope this at home facial routine helps you as much as it helps me. Remember, these facials are to be done either once a month or once every 4-6 weeks. Never do too much to your face at one time!
